They expands the spindle (few microns) to allow the insertion or extraction of the tool.
The advantages of this system are: at room temperature the quality mating (concentricity, rigidity,…), allow perfect working in extreme conditions (high number of turns, deep holes, poor lubrication,…) and a long life of the tool.
